After the great decluttering of this year โ eight boxes, remember โ I noticed something embarrassing at checkout screens. My finger would hover over "Buy Now" with the same twitchy autopilot energy as the old Instagram scroll. Different app, same itch.
So I installed a rule. One sentence long: Want something? Great. Buy it tomorrow.
How it works
- See a thing. Want the thing. Feel the little dopamine firework. Normal, human, fine.
- Instead of buying, write it in a note called "Want List" with the date and price.
- If I still want it after 24 hours โ buy it, guilt-free, with actual enthusiasm.
- Big purchases get longer timers: a week per $100 is my rough math.
The results, three months in
My Want List currently has 31 items on it. I've bought 6. The other 25 just... evaporated. I couldn't tell you what half of them even were without checking, which is exactly the point โ the wanting was real, but it wasn't about the thing. It was a mood looking for a checkout button.
Impulse is a salesman that only works the first 24 hours of a shift. Wait him out, and you get to negotiate with your actual self.
The surprising part: better purchases
Here's what I didn't expect. The 6 things I did buy? I love them more than stuff I used to impulse-buy. They survived a full day of scrutiny, so there's no buyer's remorse, no drawer destiny, no quiet guilt when I see them. The rule doesn't just filter out the junk โ it upgrades your relationship with what gets through.
Why it beats a budget (for me)
Budgets are rules about money, and my brain treats them like a boss to outsmart. The 24-hour rule isn't about money at all โ it's about time, and time is the one thing impulse can't fake. A budget says "you can't have it." The rule says "you can have it tomorrow." Somehow, that's a completely different conversation.
Total setup cost: one phone note. Total saved so far: enough for a very good month of iced lattes โ and I know that math is dangerous, because the lattes always win.
Enjoyed this post? It was powered entirely by iced coffee. You can buy the next one โ
